About MBX

MatchBOX is currently owned by Lafayette Urban Enterprise Association, a 501c3 organization. The cost of the experiences we provide our members is roughly three times the amount we charge. Our many partners make up the difference to keep MatchBOX accessible to as many people as possible. In addition to shared work space, MatchBOX offers workshops, acceleration courses, a makerspace, and active programming and partnerships to support its 300+ members and partners, and the community at large.

MBX exists to support a better future for our region that is vibrant, innovative, and optimistic. Our mission is to encourage a creative approach to business that engages everyone, challenges the status quo, and coalesces a community of change.

The studio was conceived as a way to bring the concept of coworking, which was fairly new at the time, to Greater Lafayette. The goal was to attract and retain entrepreneurs and generally encourage other creative forms of business.

Jason Tennenhouse, Purdue grad, serial entrepreneur, former president of Lafayettech, and a director on the board at Greater Lafayette Commerce at the time, served as project lead. He designed the space and refined the concept, along with his cofounders, Dennis Carson and Mikel Berger. Carson, in his role as Director of Development for the City of Lafayette, brought his passion for downtown development to the project, and Berger, cofounder of DelMar Software Development and then-president of Lafayettech, knew firsthand what was needed in a collaborative, shared workspace.

They designed and renovated 11,000 sq ft of the Stein Building at 17 South 6th Street in downtown Lafayette. The former Dodge dealership and garage is owned by Tippecanoe County Public Library, and had been gifted to them several years prior by local entrepreneur and his wife, Don and Lois Stein.

Today, Tennenhouse serves as Executive Director and Chief Visioneer, but others have joined the team and MatchBOX has evolved into what it is today. The current MatchBOX team runs marketing, membership, studio and makerspace management, partnerships, sponsorship, programming, acceleration activities, and more. Hop over to the Team page to learn more about the team.

MatchBOX has grown and changed considerably in the years since the doors opened on a spring day in 2014, but the ethos of the organization is still deeply invested in supporting the members of our community finding ways to do work differently. In many ways, MatchBOX is very much it’s own sort of perpetual startup, pivoting and changing to meet the needs of the ever-changing local business community in Greater Lafayette.

MatchBOX. A shared place to work and create.
